Apprentice Transcript

The data contains a mixture of politeness strategies. The piece contains features of both bald on record and positive politeness and negative politeness. The use of these features to some extent may be used in access or artificially because of the fact that the participants of the conversation are on reality TV show and exaggerate their behavior for ratings.
The text is a transcript between Alan sugar and his employees. Alan is the powerful participant in the unequal encounter as he uses bald on record strategies such as the interruption and the use of formulation.
“Male 1: I was the project manager I lost money but the reason I lost money (.) and I could’ve made a fortune in that shopping centre this morning if we started this morning /because/

AS: /could’ve/ (.) could’ve (.) yea could’ve (.) should’ve would’ve (.) yea but you didn’t (.) right”

Being the powerful participant in the interaction allows Alan to take advantage of the power asymmetry and threatens the face of the less powerful participants. His power is personal as he is in a sense their boss.

The other form of power in the text is the use of influential power from the female character. Female: sir alan may I say one more thing please (4)

AS: if you insist

Female: I think in this whole competition (.) if you sit back and remain quiet and under the radar (.) people assume their safe and I’ve been bold and I know I’m vocal and that /puts me/

She uses this form of language to try and influence Alan not to fire her so she uses influential power with negative politeness to lower her status so as to not to impose on alan and convince him to keep her

  3. It's good the way you pick up on different factors not only focusing on how Sir Alan uses his power but how Claire also tries to use her power to convince him to let her stay.

  4. Good ideas and theory. More terminology (and the other points from the instructions) is needed to closely analyse the language used.
